With the help of local soil conservation experts, Smith installed clean water systems, built rotational grazing paddocks, and re-seeded fields with diverse forages including crimson clover, mung beans, sun hemp, and millet. He also avoids toxic fescue and uses legumes to naturally fix nitrogen into the soil.

Sustainable, Scientific, and Humane

But regenerative farming isn’t just about pasture rotation. Smith incorporates technology like ultrasound pregnancy checks, weight-tracking software, and precision harvest planning to ensure every animal is finished with optimal quality—without stress.

“The way you treat the animal matters,” he says. “We handle them gently, trailer them one at a time, and let them rest overnight before harvest. A calm cow makes better beef.”

Smith even collaborates with other local farmers in a grassroots network called the “Grass Group” to share techniques, successes, and failures. “Agriculture is experimental,” he says. “What doesn’t work this season might work the next.”

The Wolakota Buffalo Range, a 28,000-acre stretch of prairie, is now home to one of the most ambitious buffalo restoration efforts in history—an initiative to build the largest Native American-owned and managed bison herd in the world. When complete, it will support 1,500 bison and a resurgence of identity, sovereignty, and ecological balance.

At the heart of the Rosebud mission is a philosophy passed down for centuries: the 7GEN principle. It teaches that every decision should consider the impact on the next seven generations—a guide not just for sustainability, but for morality and wisdom.

“If we make ethical decisions, and use complex systems thinking, we can build a prosperous future for all humanity,” Wizipan explains. “If we don’t—things won’t work out so well.”

Rick recalls living in a gated community where helicopters flew overhead with searchlights aimed at his backyard three nights a week. “We were essentially living in a prison of our own making,” he said. “You get home, hit the garage opener, shut the door behind you, and pray nobody followed you in.”

Jane’s wake-up call was more visceral—a carjacking attempt at gunpoint in broad daylight, in the heart of a bustling city. “That just took my happy place away instantly,” she says. “That’s when I knew I wasn’t in Kansas anymore.”

What followed was a drastic choice: sell the house, the car, and everything they didn’t need. With what remained of a 401(k), they bought rural land and committed to building a life based on one principle—self-sufficiency.

Building “Nature Culture”

Rick, a former gentleman farmer in New Hampshire and Florida, had already grown disillusioned with conventional agriculture. Pesticides, fertilizers, and monoculture planting did little to yield quality produce. “I did everything the way they said to,” he says. “And still had scabby, wormy apples.”

That failure inspired a complete rethinking of how food is grown. Drawing from indigenous knowledge and permaculture, Rick coined the term Nature Culture—a method that mimics natural ecosystems to grow food without chemicals, irrigation, or tilling.

Graywater from sinks and showers irrigates plants. Compost toilets eliminate the need for 9,000 gallons of flushed drinking water per person per year. And a recycled truck topper became a mobile chicken coop.

Jane, once a self-described “city girl” with a focus on department store sales, now makes herbal medicine, slug traps, laundry soap from plants, and seeds new crops in reused containers. “When everyone was panicking about hand sanitizer and toilet paper, we didn’t miss a beat,” she says.

Smart Livestock Choices

Their farm animals are not hobby additions—they’re functional and sustainable.

• Goats: Nigerian Dwarfs provide rich milk (50% more butterfat than cow’s milk), with three goats producing up to 1.5 gallons a day—more than enough for cheese, yogurt, and the couple’s famous goat milk ice cream.

• Rabbits: Champagne d’Argent rabbits offer high meat yields. Three does and a buck can produce up to 900 pounds of lean meat annually.

Of course, the crew had to stop.

What started as a quick detour turned into a full-on roadside pilgrimage. Cameras were rolling, treats were consumed, and the surreal blend of tourist trap meets Old West nostalgia proved irresistible.

It's not exactly buffalo habitat, but it is American history in its own delightfully weird way.

Next up, the tone shifted from kitschy to reverent at the Vore Buffalo Jump, a historic archeological site and one of the most important bison hunting locations used by Plains tribes centuries ago.

The crew pulled into Durham fresh off an inspiring shoot on the Shoshone Reservation, still buzzing from what they’d seen—restored habitats, sovereign stewardship, and a deep-rooted cultural revival. But the journey continued, and so did the story of the American buffalo—this time through the eyes of John Flocchini, whose family has made ranching bison not just a business, but a legacy.

The National Mammal and Its Comeback Story

“Bison is the national mammal of North America,” John tells the camera, standing against a sea of open range. “It’s an animal most Americans recognize and love.”

It’s easy to forget how close we came to losing them. These shaggy survivors once roamed the plains by the millions before being nearly wiped out by hunting, disease, and development. But thanks to conservationists, tribal leaders, and yes—ranchers—bison are thriving again.

And places like Durham Ranch are a major reason why.

Eat Bison, Save the Prairie

Here’s the twist that surprises a lot of folks: if you want to protect bison, you should eat them.

“It seems counterintuitive,” John admits, “but without consumers buying the meat, there wouldn’t be as many bison.”

It’s a simple but powerful equation. Bison need land. Ranchers need to care for that land. And consumers—by purchasing bison meat—help sustain the entire ecosystem. The land itself evolved alongside large ungulates like bison. Without them, it begins to deteriorate.

“Without the consumer, the chain is broken. Without the bison, the chain is broken.”

That’s not just economics. That’s ecology.

Bison on the Menu (Literally)

On the road, the documentary crew has basically turned into a walking bison-tasting tour. From rib eyes and sausages to cheddar-infused meat sticks, their protein profile is looking more prehistoric by the mile.

“I think our diet is turning into bison,” Charlie Rankin one of the producers jokes. “Which is actually a very healthy thing.”

On this leg of the journey, they’re grilling up bison burgers on a Coleman RoadTrip grill parked right outside the camper. It folds up nice, hooks to a propane line, and—most importantly—keeps the camper from smelling like last night’s dinner.

“A lot better than cooking in the camper,” they agree. And honestly, is there a better backdrop for bison burgers than 55,000 acres of free-roaming bison? Didn’t think so.

The Wind River Reservation, home to the Eastern Shoshone and Northern Arapaho tribes, is not just bringing buffalo back to the land—it’s bringing balance back to a people, a culture, and a sacred ecosystem.

Reclaiming the Land, Rebuilding the Future

The crew filmed on ground that, until recently, was not tribal land—it had been sold off during the Homestead Act era. But today, thanks to tireless effort, 300 acres have been reacquired for Native ownership, part of a growing effort to reclaim the land and its purpose.

“They just reincorporated about 300 acres on the land,” says the producer behind the camera. “It’s beautiful country out here… maybe the prettiest we’ve been to yet.”

It’s not just a backdrop—it’s sacred ground being restored.

The Buffalo Come Home

Leading the charge is Jason Baldes, a member of the Eastern Shoshone Tribe and Tribal Buffalo Program Manager for the National Wildlife Federation. Standing beside the Big Wind River, he shares how his life’s mission was sparked after witnessing the wildebeest migration in East Africa.

“To realize that one and a half million wildebeest is less than five percent of the bison population from 200 years ago—that changed me,” he says.

Baldes returned home with a vision: to bring back the bison. Not just as an animal, but as a symbol of life, sovereignty, and healing.

Bison: Keystone of the Prairie, Catalyst of Change

The bison are more than just majestic creatures. As the documentary reveals, they are ecological engineers.

Their wallowing creates microdepressions that collect water, foster seed dispersal, and encourage the growth of culturally significant plants—used for food, medicine, and tools by Native communities. Birds use bison hair to insulate their eggs, and several species of concern, including the burrowing owl and ferruginous hawk, are beginning to return with the buffalo.

“By bringing buffalo back,” Baldes says, “we also bring back butterflies, birds, reptiles, plants, and the balance that once defined this landscape.”

The return of buffalo is about more than biodiversity. It’s about food sovereignty, health, and cultural identity.

“Getting buffalo back on the dinner plates of our people is also about health and healing,” Baldes explains. “As we heal the land by restoring buffalo, we also heal our communities.”

Greg and Tami didn’t grow up wrangling livestock. In fact, Greg’s background is in grain farming, and neither had experience with animals—let alone 1,000-pound bison.

“We didn’t inherit anything,” Tami explains, standing in front of their small herd. “We bought what we could, and what we could was 80 acres.”

But what they lack in land size, they more than make up for in vision and heart.

“If you can raise animals and make your land better at the same time, it’s just the right thing to do,” Greg says. “Healthy animals, healthy land... and the people who support you—they’ll be healthier too.”

Dave Carter doesn’t just know bison. He lives them. For two decades, he’s been leading bison advocacy, and for most of that time, he and his wife have been raising them. On this ranch, they co-manage a herd of about 240 mother cows, who graze the prairie as their ancestors did. With a wry smile and an obvious affection for his animals, Carter introduces viewers to the personalities of the herd.

“It’s a matriarchal society,” he says, as bison cows saunter past the camera, “the bulls are in it for one thing—but the women run the show.” You can practically hear the bison snort in agreement.

Byron Shelton, Program Director at West Bijou Ranch, steps in to explain what’s really going on beneath all those hooves. Raised with love, trained with patience, and trusted with the weight of a dream, Spartacus isn’t just a majestic animal—he’s a symbol of the power of compassion and consistency in animal training. For Cyana Briles, Spartacus is more than livestock. He’s a confidant, a companion, and the living proof that even the most intimidating animals can become gentle giants.

Training a Titan: The Art of Working With Brahman Bulls

Training a Brahman bull is no ordinary task. These animals are highly intelligent, deeply sensitive, and—if mishandled—can be dangerous. But as exotic animal trainer Terri Bowen Lindley teaches, success doesn’t come from dominance. It comes from mentorship.

"It's not about control—it's about communication," says Lindley, whose training resume reads like a zookeeper’s dream list: horses, zebras, llamas, even giraffes. “You don’t show them who’s boss. You lead, gently.”

With consistent reinforcement, clear direction, and gentle correction, Brahman bulls can become surprisingly responsive. In Spartacus’s case, groundwork, desensitization, and even ground driving—a method akin to teaching a tank to parallel park—were all essential steps in preparing him to carry a rider.

Spartacus: From Calf to Gentle Giant

Born May 2, 2016, on Briles' Browse Farm, Spartacus was special from the start. He was affectionate, curious, and never shy about leaning into a neck rub. Raised with daily affection and introduced to gear like saddles early on, Spartacus showed from a young age that he had the temperament to do something extraordinary.

“I wasn’t sure at first if it was even possible,” Cyana admits. “But he had the personality. He loved people. And I thought—maybe this crazy dream of riding a Brahman bull isn't so crazy after all.”

Saddle Up: Facing Fears and Fulfilling Dreams

Cyana, by her own admission, was not a fearless rider. In fact, she once described herself as a nervous trail rider. But her relationship with Spartacus gave her courage. With Terri’s help, she learned to communicate better, move with the bull, and eventually—ride.

The first time she mounted Spartacus, she had to remind herself to breathe. “I wasn’t scared,” she says. “I was just overwhelmed that it was really happening. I was riding my dream.”

Moo-ving Through the World

Spartacus is more than just a ridable bull—he’s a local celebrity. His calm demeanor has made him a beloved figure at farmers markets, town parades, and even Tractor Supply stores. He’s posed for photos, let children sit on him, and earned a fan club of people who waited over 45 minutes just to spend two minutes in his presence.

But perhaps the most extraordinary thing? None of it is monetized. “He’s not a gimmick,” says Cyana. “He’s a gift. I want people—especially kids—to meet him, to see what Brahman bulls can be. That kind of joy shouldn’t come with a price tag.”

Therapy With Horns

For Cyana, Spartacus is more than a public ambassador. He’s her therapist.

“When I’m having a hard day, I go out to the pasture, and he rests his big head on my shoulder like he just knows,” she says, voice thick with emotion. “I talk, and he listens. And somehow, everything feels better.”

A Message Bigger Than the Bull

Spartacus’s story is about more than just one bull. It’s about challenging assumptions—about animals, about ourselves, and about what’s possible with enough love and respect.

He was never just a calf. He was a dream waiting to happen. And now, every time Cyana swings her leg over that broad, strong back and takes a ride through the fields, she rides with pride, with gratitude—and with a new belief:

“If I can ride a Brahman bull at 50, I can do anything.”

That one bull turned into a full herd. Over time, they phased out their commercial cows and shifted entirely to raising registered Brahman cattle. The focus wasn’t just on looks or lineage—it was temperament. “I don’t want rank cows,” she says. “I breed for temperament. I want oversized dogs, not livestock I have to fear.”

A Family Farm with Purpose

Her husband may be behind the scenes, but he’s no less vital to the operation. They make decisions together, raise animals together, and care for the land as stewards. “We weren’t in it to make fast money,” she says. “We wanted to live our passion and build something that matters.”

Their farm isn’t fancy—but it’s honest, peaceful, and full of character. “Most of our money goes into the land and our cows. That’s what matters to us.”

Educating and Sharing the Experience

What sets this breeder apart is not just her commitment to Brahmans, but her desire to share them with the world. She welcomes calls and visits from anyone interested in learning more about the breed. “You don’t have to buy a cow. If you’re curious or just want to meet one, come visit. We’ll give you a handful of treats and let the cows do the rest.”

She believes Brahman cattle must be experienced to be understood—their intelligence, their gentleness, their presence. “I always want people to feel like they can come here, ask questions, and leave with a little more knowledge and a whole lot more love for these animals.”

While registered Brahmans can be pricey, especially top genetics from Texas herds, she sees her investment not in dollars, but in purpose. “I’m raising seedstock,” she says. “These calves are going into other people’s breeding programs. It’s about stewardship, sustainability, and sharing something beautiful.”

Her farm is more than a business—it’s a labor of love, a mission, and a living example of what it means to be deeply connected to the animals, the land, and the legacy of American agriculture.

Founded by a retired couple with a dream and a strong family work ethic, Trinity Bison Ranch is the living embodiment of what happens when innovation, agriculture, and imagination come together. What began as a modest bison operation has transformed into Buffalo Creek Vacations, a bustling 65-acre destination packed with charm, purpose, and unforgettable experiences.

The Birth of a Bison Dream

“We wanted something made in America,” says the founder, reflecting on his decision to raise bison. “Truly an American animal.”

After retiring and moving south in search of a more temperate climate, the family purchased the property and began raising bison. But this was never just about livestock—it was about legacy. As the bison herd grew, so did their vision for something unique that could both support the ranch and share it with others.

What followed was nothing short of extraordinary: hand-built cabins, renovated cabooses turned into full-fledged luxury suites, petting zoos, hiking trails, a model train exhibit, and educational experiences all rolled into one unforgettable destination.

Caboose Cabins: A Luxury Stay on the Rails

The shining gem of the ranch’s lodging experience is the caboose cabins—actual train cars, each weighing up to 55,000 pounds, painstakingly transported by truck and crane to the ranch and then lovingly transformed into cozy, upscale rentals.

Complete with wood-burning fireplaces, game rooms, hot tubs, fully outfitted kitchens, and even Thanksgiving-ready cookware, these cabins aren’t just places to sleep—they’re part of the adventure.

From the MoPac caboose to a military troop sleeper, each unit offers not only comfort but a story. Positioned to overlook the bison corral, guests can sip their morning coffee while watching America’s most iconic mammals graze peacefully just yards away.

The “Bison Escape” and Petting Zoo: Learning Through Experience

Every morning at 9:30, guests gather for what the ranch lovingly calls the “Bison Escape”—a safe, guided experience where visitors feed oats to the bison, learn about their behaviors, and experience the gentle wildness of these magnificent animals.

“They hear the tractor,” the owner says with a smile, “and no matter where they are on the property, they come running.”

But the educational journey doesn’t end with bison. The ranch also features a petting zoo with horses, goats, turkeys, rabbits, birds, and even a rare “misty”—a hybrid of a male llama and a female alpaca. Kids light up as they meet the animals, many for the first time. It's hands-on education that sticks.

The log cabins were constructed by hand with help from their children. The interiors were outfitted by the matriarch and daughter, creating homey, welcoming spaces with personalized touches. Many of the building materials were harvested right from the property itself.

“We like to always provide a rental unit that someone’s really going to remember,” says the founder. “Something they’ll look back on and say—Remember that time we stayed in a train car and watched bison from the porch?”
